Weerawila Tissa Sanctuary
Weerawila Tissa Sanctuary is a true haven for bird lovers, offering an unforgettable bird-watching experience throughout the year. The sanctuary’s diverse ecosystem of lakes, wetlands, and forested areas provides a safe refuge for approximately 80 bird species. It is particularly renowned for its abundance of water birds such as the Painted Stork, Black-headed Ibis, Grey Heron, and Spot-billed Pelican, which can often be seen feeding and nesting along the shores of its lakes and reservoirs.

In addition to daytime sightings, Weerawila Tissa is also a hotspot for nocturnal birds, where enthusiasts can encounter species such as Barn Owls, Brown Fish Owls, and Indian Nightjars, adding a magical touch to the birding experience after dusk.

Whether you are a keen birder or simply a nature lover, the sanctuary’s peaceful surroundings and rich avian life make it one of the best locations in southern Sri Lanka to observe both resident and migratory birds in their natural habitat.
